Podcasting. You've heard of it, seen your students carrying MP3 players, and you may have given it a try. There is a new design model for podcasting called kBurst.
I have had the pleasure of working with David Penrose, a very talented instructional designer and manager of online services at San Juan College, to develop a process of podcasting that he calls kBurst, short for Knowledge Burst. kBursts condense one hour of lecture into a 60-second podcast designed to excite learners about a topic.
A kBurst is comprised of four distinct parts:
- the instructor begins with a brief introduction to the concepts
- a list of five to ten keywords
- instructor's wrap up of the topic
- an assignment for students to get started on the path of finding and evaluating information for themselves.
This constructivist approach to educational podcasting engages the student in a very learner-centered activity. Visit the kburst website to learn more.
Kbursting is a technique where an instructor takes essentially an hour of lecture material and condenses it down to a 60 second podcast with a transcript included. The students are then able to download the podcast to their iPod or other mobile device and listen to it as many times as they like. The kBurst then becomes the focus or anticipatory set for student centered investigation of a topic. Below I have linked the graphic organizer that is used with faculty to get them started writing their kBursts.
